Take action now to support our democracy!

In Embracing our connection, Reclaiming Democracy

Given the recent murders of U.S. citizens by Trump’s Gestapo, it’s clear that we must take effective action to support our democracy and subdue the current move toward authoritarianism in our nation. Here are some ways you can take action right now.

  • Call your representatives in Congress: Daily, consistent communication with your elected officials make your stance against threats to democracy known.
    • 5 Calls is the easiest and most effective way for youd to make a political impact. 5 Calls will provide you with a script and tell you who to call for your chosen issue, from Representatives and Senators to Governors and Attorneys General.
  • Attend town halls and candidate forums: By showing up at town halls and forums, you can publicly ask tough questions and voice your concerns, which is a key part of holding representatives accountable.
    • WLOS is offering a US District 11 Candidate Forum for five candidates running in the Democratic primary for the North Carolina seat currently held by Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards. It is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28th, at 7:00 p.m. and will be live streamed on YouTube and Facebook. Get additional information here.
  • Join or organize local resistance groups: Connecting with local groups helps build solidarity, share resources, and develop a long-term political infrastructure at the grassroots level. Below are some local Asheville groups:
    • Immigrant Justice Together Black Mountain is hosting a community forum on Thursday, January 29th, 5:45 – 8:00 pm. Get details here including how to register.
    • Interfaith Action Network invites people of faith to join together to support democracy and resist authoritarianism.
    • Indivisible Asheville/WNC focuses on combating national and local extremism, advocating for progressive policies, and organizing voter outreach in Western NC.
    • Seimbra NC provides trainings or additional ways to plug into the ongoing community response to the immigration enforcement crackdown in North Carolina via Defend and Recruit.
    • CIMA (Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Accion) is a Latinx-led nonprofit organization based in Asheville, NC, dedicated to organizing and advocating for immigrant rights. CIMA operates a 24/7 Rapid Response Hotline (1-888-839-2839) to verify reports of ICE activity and provide immediate support for families facing detention.
  • Boycott corporations and organizations that are enabling authoritarianism: Use your consumer power by avoiding businesses that support anti-democratic efforts. This can harm brand names and affect stock prices, sending a powerful message that has proven effective with Tesla, Home Depot, Target, Starbucks, Walmart, Amazon, and Avelo Airlines. • Protect the most vulnerable in your community: Stand up against attacks on targeted groups, such as undocumented immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and election workers. This can involve supporting local initiatives, documenting incidents, speaking out against bigotry, and backing mutual aid groups.

In America power belongs to the people. Together we can stop the current madness and create a culture that provides an opportunity for an enjoyable and fulfilling life for all our citizens while sustaining and nurturing the planet we live on.
